Experience Exchange Visit for Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA)

A delegation of the Iraqi Mine Action Agency led by the head of MRE unit comprising MRE specialist of IKMAA and representatives of handicap International established in Iraq with the aim of focusing on Community Based Mine Risk Education (CBMRE), rehabilitation and capacity building of local organization visited Sri Lanka during the time period from 19th to 23rd November 2012.

The main objective of this visit was to a potential experience exchange in relation to community based MRE and observe the Mine Risk Education activities in Sri Lanka by a field visit of the Northern Province covering Jaffna, Vavuniya and Mullativu Districts.

According to the scheduled five days programme, in first day they visited National Mine Action Centre of Sri Lanka under purview of the Ministry of Economic Development. During this visit, Director/Mine Action and his staff welcomed the delegation to Sri Lanka and Director made a presentation on overview of the National Mine Action programme of Sri Lanka. At the end of the presentation delegation was able to get an overall idea of the Mine Action programme with a fruitful discussion. Thereafter, MRE delegation left for UNICEF Country office in Colombo to have a brief on Mine Risk Education Programme of Sri Lanka.

Next four days of their visit, delegation got experiences in visiting field of Vavuniya, Mullativu and Jaffna Districts where MRE activities are being carried out by each MRE operators. During the above field visit, they were able to observe especially MRE community mapping, MRE street drama, School base MRE programme, Village MRE information centre, focus group discussion and Mine Victim house.

The MRE delegation back to Iraq on Saturday 24th November 2012 with making comments and suggestions to establish a kind of network to keep communication and exchange experiences.
